The Brothers-O'Neil House is a cool example of Bungalow architecture, a popular style from the early 1900s. It's located in Augusta, Kentucky. This house was built a long time ago, between 1916 and 1917, and it's even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

What Makes This House Special?

The Brothers-O'Neil House shows off many features of the Bungalow style. It has a special kind of roof called a gable roof. This roof has a small window sticking out, called a dormer, and a brick chimney on one side.

Outside the House

  • The front porch is supported by two big columns made of brick.
  • The bottom part of the house, called the foundation, is made of concrete with a sandstone base.
  • The sides of the house have different materials. Some parts have wood shingles, and other parts have aluminum siding.

Inside the House

When you go inside, you'd see ceilings with wooden beams. Many of the original wooden details are still there, showing how the house looked when it was first built.

Who Lived Here? A Look at Its History

The land where the Brothers-O'Neil House stands has an interesting past.

Early Land Ownership

In 1916, the land was given to the Home Mission of the Presbyterian Church by Marie M. Marshall. Soon after, a man named William Sayers owned it for a short time.

Building the House

Later in 1916, L. M. Brothers, who was an undertaker in Augusta, bought the empty land. His son-in-law, Leo G. O'Neil, built the house between 1916 and 1917. In 1917, Brothers gave O'Neil half ownership of the house and property. Both families lived in the house together for a few years.

Changing Hands

In 1922, Leo G. O'Neil transferred his share of the house to his former wife as part of a legal agreement. She then sold the property in 1923 to Isaac Reynolds. The house has been a part of Augusta's history ever since!
