Exploring the Brown-Davis-Frost Farm
The Brown-Davis-Frost Farm is located in a quiet, rural part of western Holden. The property covers about 50 acres, which is like 50 football fields! This land includes open fields for animals (pasture) and thick woods.
What Does the Farm Look Like?
The main part of the farm is on the west side of Whitney Street. It's not far from where Whitney Street meets Princeton Street. The most important building is the farmhouse itself. It's a two-and-a-half story house made of brick. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides and four chimneys. The house sits on a strong foundation made of granite.
Other Buildings on the Farm
Besides the main house, there are other buildings too. These include a barn, a workshop, and a garage. The garage has been changed into a kennel, which is a place for dogs. There are also a few other smaller buildings on the property. The front of the house looks almost the same on both sides. The main door is a little off-center. You won't see many fancy decorations on the outside of the house.
A Glimpse into the Farm's Past
It's a bit tricky to know exactly when the farmhouse was built. This is because it looks like many other old farmhouses from that time. Local historians, who study the past, think it might have been built as early as 1763. Isaiah Brown might have built it then. Others think it could have been built later, around 1795, by Ethan Davis. Either way, it's one of the few brick houses in Holden from the 1700s.
Who Lived Here?
Isaiah Brown was a soldier in the American Revolutionary War. He sold land to Ethan Davis in 1799. This land might have included the house we see today. Later, Ethan Davis sold the farm to Dana Frost. When the farm was listed on the National Register, its owner believed it was the oldest working farm in Holden.
