Brown Derby (liquor company) facts for kids
The Brown Derby is a group of stores located in and around Springfield, Missouri. The very first Brown Derby store opened its doors in Springfield in 1937. It was started by John A. Morris.
The Brown Derby is well-known because it was the first place where John L. Morris sold fishing lures and other fishing gear. John L. Morris is the son of the Brown Derby's founder. He later became the owner of the famous Bass Pro Shops, which is also based in Springfield. John L. Morris began selling his fishing and outdoor products from a small 8x8 foot (2.4x2.4 meter) area inside his father's store. He officially started Bass Pro Shops in 1972.
History
The first Brown Derby store was opened in 1937. It was founded by John A. Morris. He was the father of John L. Morris, who later created the well-known outdoor retail chain, Bass Pro Shops.
Over the years, the Brown Derby has grown quite a bit. Today, there are 18 Brown Derby locations. These stores are all in and around Springfield, Missouri.
