Buckingham, Richardson, Texas facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Buckingham was once a small, independent town in Texas, United States. It was located right next to the city of Richardson, near Dallas. In 1990, Buckingham had about 102 people living there and covered only 159 acres (about 0.6 square kilometers).

In the early 1980s, some people who buy and sell land thought Buckingham would be a great place for a big new community, like a planned neighborhood. To help this idea, the people living in Buckingham voted to allow stores to sell certain drinks. However, the land market changed, and the company planning the development eventually ran into financial trouble.

The 1990s brought more building to the area. Sometimes, this caused disagreements between Buckingham and its neighbor, Richardson. For example, at one point, school zone signs were taken down from a road in Buckingham. Parents had to stand by the road and wave flags to tell drivers to slow down for safety!

Finally, in April 1996, Buckingham and Richardson decided to join together. Buckingham became part of Richardson. Because Buckingham had allowed stores to sell certain drinks before joining Richardson, that area stayed "wet" (meaning stores could sell those drinks). At that time, most of Richardson was "dry" (meaning stores couldn't sell them). Later, in 2006, Richardson residents voted, and now stores throughout Richardson can sell beer and wine.
