The Bucknam House is a very old and special house in Columbia Falls, Maine, United States. It was built way back in 1792 by one of the first people to settle in the area. This house is a great example of a building style called Georgian architecture. It was added to the list of important historic places, called the National Register of Historic Places, in 1975.

About the Bucknam House

The Bucknam House stands on the north side of Main Street. It faces south, looking out towards the Pleasant River. This house is two and a half stories tall. It is made of wood and has a roof that slopes down on two sides.

What the House Looks Like

The house has a large chimney in the middle. Its outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The foundation is made of strong granite. The outside design is simple and classic. It has plain cornerboards and a simple front door area. The door has thin, flat columns and a triangle-shaped top.

Inside, the house has a common layout for its time. There is a narrow entrance hallway. A winding staircase leads up to the second floor. On each side of the central chimney are main rooms. The kitchen stretches across the back of the house. Smaller rooms are found on either side of the kitchen. Most of the wooden details inside are original and look very good.

Who Built the House?

The Bucknam House was built in 1792 by a man named John Bucknam. He came to this area in the 1760s. John Bucknam was one of the very first people to settle here. He used the many trees in the area to build a sawmill. This helped the small settlement grow bigger.

John Bucknam also helped protect his community. He served in the local army during the American Revolutionary War. He joined for duty in 1777 and again in 1779. Sadly, he passed away at age 46, not long after building this important house. The Bucknam House was quite large and fancy for a house built in such a faraway place back then.
