What Was the Buena Vista Colored School?
This school was built in 1914 and made bigger in 1926. It's a one-story building made of brick, with a special roof made of sheet metal. There's also a small brick building nearby that was used to store wood and coal for heating the school.
A Place for Learning
For many years, from 1914 to 1957, the Buena Vista Colored School was the only school in the area for African American children. Students in grades 1 through 7 came here to learn. It was a very important place for education in the community.
Saving History: The Museum Project
In 2002, a group called the Buena Vista Colored School Historical Society was formed. Their goal is to fix up the old school building. They want to turn it into a museum. It will also be a community center where people can gather. This project helps to remember the school's history.
What is the National Register of Historic Places?
The Buena Vista Colored School was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. This is a special list kept by the United States government. Buildings and places on this list are important because of their history or special design. Being on the list helps protect them.
