Buldania is an abandoned town in Western Australia. It is located north-east of Norseman. Buldania is part of the Goldfields-Esperance region. It is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of the Eyre Highway.

What is Buldania?

Buldania is known as a "ghost town." This means it was once a busy place, but now almost no one lives there. It was established in 1896. The town was built to support a mining area.

How Buldania Started

The mining area near Buldania was found in June 1896. A person named Arthur Bell discovered it. Miners hoped to find valuable minerals there. The land was difficult to work on. It had very hard rock, mostly quartz, deep underground. Also, there wasn't enough money (capital) to develop the mines properly.

Why Buldania Became a Ghost Town

Even though the mines had a lot of valuable ore, progress was slow. By the end of 1897, Buldania had 51 people living there. Interestingly, only one of them was a female. This shows how tough and remote the mining life was back then.

However, the population quickly dropped. By April 1901, only 18 people remained. By 1903, a newspaper called the Western Argus reported that the area was "practically deserted." An official report in May 1906 confirmed this. It said that all the mining leases were abandoned. The entire field was "quite deserted." This is why Buldania became an abandoned town.
