Burl Ives Sings Little White Duck and Other Children’s Favorites is a popular album of folk songs for kids. It was recorded by the famous singer and actor Burl Ives. He sang and played the guitar on these songs. The album was first released in 1959. It features many well-known tunes that children have enjoyed for a long time.

About the Album

This album is a collection of fun and gentle songs for young listeners. Burl Ives recorded these songs between 1949 and 1951. They were originally released by Columbia Records.

How the Album Grew

The songs on this album came out in different ways over the years.

  • In 1950, some of Burl Ives's songs were part of a 10-inch record called Animal Fair: Songs for Children.
  • Before that, in 1949, these same songs were on a set of two 78-rpm records.
  • In 1956, another collection of Ives's children's songs came out. It was called Children's Favorites and included "The Little White Duck."
  • Later, in 1957, Columbia Records put out a bigger 12-inch album. It combined many of these songs and added two more. This album was named Burl Ives Sings Songs for All Ages.

The Final Version

Two years later, in 1959, the album was changed a bit. Two songs were removed, and it was given its final title: Burl Ives Sings Little White Duck and Other Children's Favorites. This version was released on Harmony Records, which was a budget label.

Over time, the album was updated for new technologies.

  • Around 1963, the album was made to sound like stereo, even though it was originally recorded in mono.
  • In 1974, it was re-released as an LP and also on cassette tape.
  • On November 22, 1988, the album became available on CD, with improved digital sound.
  • Later, in 1995, Sony Wonder took over distributing the CD.

The album cover you see was designed by Ed Lee and Eloise Smith. The pictures were drawn by Reynolds Ruffin. Today, the CD might be hard to find in stores, but you can still buy it online. All the songs are also available to download as MP3 files.
