The Burt–Cheney Farm is a really old and special farm in Bethlehem, New Hampshire. You can find it along U.S. Route 302. The main house was built around 1818. It's a great example of an early Cape-style house. This makes it one of the oldest buildings still standing in Bethlehem! Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

Discovering the Burt–Cheney Farm

The Burt–Cheney Farm is located in the western part of Bethlehem. It sits on about 16.5 acres of land. You can find it on the north side of US 302. A stone wall runs along the property next to the road.

What Does the Farm Look Like?

The main house is a 1½-story building made of wood. It has a central chimney and a gabled roof. The outside is covered with clapboard siding. The front of the house has five windows and a door in the middle. Everything is arranged in a balanced way.

Inside, the house has a classic central chimney layout. There's a small entrance area. On each side of the chimney, you'll find parlors or living rooms. Smaller rooms are located at the back of the house. You can see the wooden beams that hold the house up. The walls are finished with special wood panels called wainscoting.

How Old Is This Historic Farm?

The oldest part of the house was built around 1810. It was built by Simeon Burt. He was one of the first people to settle in this area. Mr. Burt made the house bigger in 1817. That's when it got its current look with the central chimney.

This farm is thought to be the second-oldest house in Bethlehem. It's also one of the best examples of an early farm in the whole region. A big highway, Interstate 93, was built later. This highway separated the farm from most of its original land.
