Busen Point or Busen Peninsula (54°9′S 36°33′W / 54.150°S 36.550°W / -54.150; -36.550) is a piece of land that sticks out into the sea. It forms the southeast side of the entrance to Stromness Bay. This bay is on the north coast of South Georgia, a remote island in the southern Atlantic Ocean.

Busen Point is located on a larger piece of land called the Lewin Peninsula. This peninsula sits between two bays: Cumberland West Bay and Stromness Bay.

Naming Busen Point

People knew about Busen Point for a long time. However, its name first appeared on maps made between 1927 and 1929. These maps were created by people from the Discovery Investigations. This group explored the oceans and lands around Antarctica.

The point was named after the head of Husvik Harbour. Husvik Harbour is a small bay located within Stromness Bay.

The Lewin Peninsula

The land where Busen Point is found is called the Lewin Peninsula. This peninsula was named by the Antarctic Placenames Committee. This committee is in charge of naming places in the Antarctic region.

They named it after Terence Lewin, Baron Lewin. He was a very important military leader in the United Kingdom. In 1982, he played a key role in leading the effort to take back South Georgia after it was invaded.

Nearby Rocks

Close to Busen Point, there are three important rocks in the sea. They are located to the northeast of the point. The rock furthest out to sea is called Bucentaur Rock.
