But Never Jam Today opened on July 31, 1979. It was performed at the Longacre Theatre in New York City. The show was produced by Arch Nadler, Anita MacShane, and The Urban Arts Theatre. Unfortunately, it only ran for a short time, closing on August 5, 1979, after just eight performances.
The show was directed by Vinnette Carroll. She also helped create the idea for the musical. The dances were choreographed by Talley Beatty. Donald O. Johnston was in charge of the music.
