How Butler's Golf Course Began
The land where Butler's Golf Course now stands was once an airport and a strawberry farm. It was owned by a man named John W. Butler. In 1925, the airport had to close down. This happened after a stunt pilot took Butler's daughter for a ride and did a risky loop-di-loop!
Soon after, Mr. Butler decided to change his land. He hired people who knew a lot about golf. Together, they built the first 18 holes of the golf course. These original holes opened to the public in 1928. The first clubhouse was built in the 1930s. However, it was completely destroyed by a tornado on August 3, 1963.
Growing and Changing Over the Years
After the tornado, a new clubhouse was quickly rebuilt. The original Butler family house was also turned into a bed and breakfast. This meant tourists could stay there while on vacation.
In 1963, the Lakeside course opened with its first nine holes. The original 18 holes were rebuilt and became known as the Woodside course. This happened once the Lakeside course was finished. Later, in 1996, the back nine holes of the Woodside course were given a new name: the Vista course.
More holes were added to the Lakeside course in the year 2000. Today, the two main courses are still known as the Woodside and the Lakeside.
Butler's Golf Course Today
Today, Butler's Golf Course is still a family business. It is now owned and run by the fourth generation of the Butler family. This means the great-grandchildren of the original owner are in charge!
