Elizabeth Town was started in 1787 by Samuel Mackay, Colonel Stephen Bayard, and his wife, Elizabeth Mackay Bayard. The town was named after Elizabeth Mackay Bayard. The next year, Elizabeth became one of the first seven townships organized in Allegheny County.

The original Elizabeth Township was very large. It included all the land shaped like a triangle between the Monongahela and Youghiogheny Rivers. This means it covered areas that are now other towns and boroughs, like Forward Township and Glassport.

In 1803, a special boat called a keelboat was built in Elizabeth. This boat was used for the first parts of the famous Lewis and Clark Expedition. However, the city of Pittsburgh also claims that this boat was built there. On April 2, 1834, Elizabeth officially became a borough. Later, in 1869, Forward Township and Lincoln Township became separate from Elizabeth Township.

Early Jobs and Businesses

Elizabeth was once a busy place with many different industries. Some of the earliest jobs included making glass and building safes. The town was also important for building and repairing steamboats and other ships. Companies like O'Neil & Company built steamboats from 1895, and the Elizabeth Marine Ways operated for many years.

In 1876, Elizabeth also had two coal inclines. These were like small railways that carried coal up and down hills. They were called the O'Neil and Company Coal Incline and the Lobb's Run Incline.

Nike Missile Site

From 1956 to 1963, Elizabeth was the site of a Nike anti-aircraft missile base. This was a place where missiles were kept to protect against enemy aircraft during the Cold War. The exact location was at 40 degrees 15 minutes 17 seconds North and 79 degrees 57 minutes 59 seconds West.

Places of Worship

Elizabeth is home to several churches:

  • Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church
  • Bethesda United Presbyterian Church Of Elizabeth
  • Elizabeth Baptist Church
  • Elizabeth United Methodist Church
  • Elizabeth Wesleyan Church
  • First Presbyterian Church Of Elizabeth – founded 1851

The Old Graveyard

The oldest cemetery in Elizabeth is called "The Old Graveyard." It is located on Bayard Street. This cemetery is where Elizabeth Mackay Bayard, the person the town is named after, is buried. The first burial in this cemetery happened in 1774, making it a very historic spot.
