Buttah Windee is a small Aboriginal community located in Western Australia. It is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) west of the town of Meekatharra. This community is part of the Mid-West region of Western Australia. It is also within the area managed by the Shire of Meekatharra.
Understanding Native Title
Buttah Windee is in an area where the Wajarri Yamatji people have a special connection to the land. This connection is recognized by Australian law as "native title." It means their traditional rights and interests in the land are officially acknowledged. This recognition comes from the Native Title Act 1993.
How the Community is Managed
The Buttah Windee community manages itself through a group called the Buttah Windee Aboriginal Corporation. This corporation was officially set up on June 16, 1993. It operates under a law called the Aboriginal Councils and Associations Act 1976. This law helps Aboriginal communities form groups to manage their own affairs.
Planning for the Future
The community has a special plan for its development called Buttah Windee Layout Plan No.1. This plan helps guide how the community will grow and be organized. It follows rules set by the State Planning Policy 3.2 for Aboriginal Settlements. The community approved this plan on March 21, 2007. The Western Australian Planning Commission also approved it on November 13, 2007. You can find details about this plan on the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage website.
The community has also worked to ensure safe drinking water for everyone. A special system using hydropanels has been put in place. This system helps to provide clean and safe water for the residents.
