Butternut Square was a fun Canadian television show made for children. It aired on CBC Television from October 19, 1964, to February 10, 1967. The show featured Ernie Coombs, who later became very famous as Mr. Dressup. His own popular television series began after Butternut Square finished.
The show was broadcast in black and white, meaning it didn't have color. Each episode was first 20 minutes long. Later, for its final season, the episodes were made longer, lasting a full 30 minutes.
From Butternut Square to Mr. Dressup
After Butternut Square ended, Ernie Coombs started his own show. This new series was called Mr. Dressup. It began in the fall of 1967.
Two beloved puppet characters from Butternut Square also joined him. These were Casey and Finnegan. They became very popular on the Mr. Dressup show. Mr. Dressup continued to entertain children for many years, running until 1996.
