About Bülent Ersoy

Early Life and Music Start

Bülent Ersoy was born in 1952 in Malatya, Turkey. Her original family name was Erkoç, but she changed it to Ersoy, which means "brave lineage," on the advice of a friend.

She started her music journey as a male singer, focusing on Turkish classical music. Her grandparents also loved classical Turkish music, which inspired her. She took private lessons and later studied at the Istanbul Municipal Conservatory. From a young age, she became a popular singer and actress in Turkey.

In April 1981, Bülent Ersoy made a personal decision to live as a woman. Even though "Bülent" is usually a boy's name, she chose to keep it. This was a very important step for her.

Challenges and Comeback

After she began living as a woman, Bülent Ersoy faced some difficulties. At that time, the government in Turkey had strict rules. They banned public performances by Bülent Ersoy and other people who were transgender.

To be recognized as a woman legally, she asked the Turkish courts for help, but her request was turned down in 1982. Because of these rules, she decided to leave Turkey in 1983. She moved to West Germany and continued her singing and acting career there. She even made several Turkish movies while living abroad.

Later, in 1989, the government leader changed, and many of the strict rules were removed. This allowed Bülent Ersoy to return to Turkey and continue her successful career.

In late 2010, Bülent Ersoy shared that she had listened to nearly 1,500 songs to pick the best ones for her new album. Her album, Aşktan Sabıkalı (Love Convict), came out on October 3, 2011. This album included a song by Can Tanrıyar called "Alışmak İstemiyorum" (I Don't Wanna Get Used to It) and a classic song by Orhan Gencebay called "Bir Teselli Ver" (Give Me Solace).

The album also featured a song by Gülşen named "Aşktan Sabıkalı," which became the album's title. A very popular song on the album was a duet with Tarkan, titled "Bir Ben Bir Allah Biliyor" (Only I and Allah know). This song was special because it brought together two of Turkey's biggest artists. In December 2011, a music video for this song was released.

In 2013, when she appeared on TRT, Bülent Ersoy explained that her pop-arabesque songs were mostly for earning money. She stressed that her true passion was classical music, which she studied in college.

Even though her last album was in 2011, she hadn't released any new classical or Alaturka (Turkish style) music since her album Alaturka 2000. In 2015, she talked about making a new Alaturka album with Orhan Gencebay. In 2016, she mentioned listening to many new songs but not finding ones she liked for a pop/arabesque album.

Bülent Ersoy has since become more active in music again. In March 2019, she released a new song called "Ümit Hırsızı," which was written by Tarkan.
