CD-i The Legend of Zelda games facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Legend of Zelda is a super popular video game series from Nintendo. But did you know there are three Zelda games that aren't from Nintendo? These games were made for a console called the Philips CD-i. They are quite famous, but not for being good! Most people didn't like them very much.

What Are the CD-i Zelda Games?

The Philips CD-i was a special kind of console from the 1990s. It was made by a company called Philips. Unlike other game consoles, the CD-i was designed to do many things, like play music CDs, show educational programs, and even play movies. It also played video games, but it wasn't very popular for gaming.

How These Games Came to Be

Nintendo, the company that makes The Legend of Zelda, once had a plan to work with Philips. They wanted to create a special add-on for their Super Nintendo console that could play games from CDs. This plan didn't work out, but Philips still got an agreement to use some of Nintendo's characters.

This agreement led to Philips making four games using Nintendo characters. Three of these games were based on The Legend of Zelda series. The fourth game was called Hotel Mario.

The Games Themselves

There are three Legend of Zelda games made for the Philips CD-i:

  • Link: The Faces of Evil
  • Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon
  • Zelda's Adventure

Link: The Faces of Evil

This game lets you play as Link, the hero of Hyrule. He travels to a land called Koridai to stop the evil wizard Ganon. The game has animated cutscenes that look very different from other Zelda games.

Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon

In this game, you play as Princess Zelda. She goes on a quest to save Link and her father, the King, from the evil Duke Onkled. Like Link: The Faces of Evil, this game also has unique animated scenes.

Zelda's Adventure

This third game is quite different from the other two. You play as Princess Zelda again, but the game uses real-life photos for its backgrounds instead of drawings. The game's camera view is also from above, like older Zelda games.

Why Weren't They Popular?

When these games came out, many video game magazines and players didn't like them. They were often criticized for several reasons:

  • Graphics: The animated scenes looked strange to many players.
  • Controls: The way you controlled the characters felt awkward and difficult.
  • Gameplay: The games didn't feel like traditional Legend of Zelda adventures.
  • Voice Acting: The voices in the animated scenes were often seen as funny or odd.

Even though these games weren't popular, they have become well-known online for their unique style and memorable animated clips.
