Cacahoatán is a city and a municipality in the southern part of Mexico. It is located in the Mexican state of Chiapas. The name "Cacahoatán" comes from the Nahuatl language, meaning "the land of cocoa." This area is known for its cocoa production.
The municipality covers an area of about 173.9 square kilometers. In 2010, the total population of the municipality was 43,811 people. This was an increase from 39,033 people in 2005. The city of Cacahoatán itself had a population of 16,572 in 2010.
Besides the main city, the municipality has many smaller towns and villages. Some of the larger ones in 2010 included Salvador Urbina, Faja de Oro, Agustín de Iturbide, and Unión Roja.

Cacahoatán has a tropical monsoon climate. This means it has distinct wet and dry seasons. From December to March, there is not much rain. However, from April to November, it rains a lot, especially in June and September. It is actually one of the wettest cities in Mexico!
