The Rivière Cachée (which means Hidden River in English) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into the Saint-Maurice River, which then flows into the big Saint Lawrence River. This river is entirely located within the town of Notre-Dame-du-Mont-Carmel. It's called "Hidden River" because of how it winds through the landscape, often out of sight.

Where Does the Hidden River Flow?
The Hidden River starts from a place called Valmont Lake. This lake is pretty small, about 0.7 km (0.43 mi) long. It's located in a big swampy area near Shawinigan-Sud and Lac-à-la-Tortue.
The River's Journey
From Valmont Lake, the Hidden River flows for about 17.6 km (10.9 mi). It mostly travels through forests.
- First, it goes southwest for about 3.7 km (2.3 mi). It crosses a road called chemin du rang Saint-Louis.
- Then, it continues southwest for another 2.6 km (1.6 mi), passing under the Chemin Saint-Louis road bridge.
- After that, it turns south for about 2.9 km (1.8 mi). It winds a lot and crosses Route 157.
- Finally, it flows southwest for about 8.4 km (5.2 mi), winding its way until it meets the Saint-Maurice River.
Where the River Ends
The Hidden River joins the Saint-Maurice River on its east bank. This meeting point is very close to the La Gabelle dam, about 0.8 km (0.50 mi) upstream from it. It's also about 2.2 km (1.4 mi) southeast of a railway bridge that crosses the Saint-Maurice River.
Why is it Called the Hidden River?
The name "Rivière Cachée" (Hidden River) comes from how the river flows. It has many twists and turns, especially in its lower part. These curves are often at the bottom of a small valley, making the river seem "hidden" from view.
Long ago, a part of the old road connecting Shawinigan-Sud and Cap-de-la-Madeleine was called the "Hidden Coast." This road also had many curves in a similar hidden valley.
The name "Rivière Cachée" became official on December 5, 1968, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like a government group that names places in Quebec.
