Who Started the Cadbury Chocolate Company?

The story of the Cadbury family and their chocolate business began with Richard Tapper Cadbury (1768–1860). He was a draper (someone who sells cloth) and also worked to end slavery. He helped his sons start their business.

His son, John Cadbury (1801–1889), was a Quaker and is known as the founder of the Cadbury chocolate company. He worked with his brothers to build the business.

John Cadbury had several children who continued his work and made the company even more successful.

Richard Cadbury: A Sweet Legacy

Richard Cadbury (1835–1899) was a manufacturer and also a kind person who gave a lot to charity. He helped grow the chocolate business.

His son, Barrow Cadbury (1862–1958), later became the head of the chocolate factory. He also started the Barrow Cadbury Trust, a charity that helps people.

  • Dorothy Adlington Cadbury (1892–1987) was a director at Cadbury and a botanist (someone who studies plants). You might even see her name on the side of tubs of Cadbury Roses chocolates!
  • Paul Cadbury (1895–1984) took over as the head of the Barrow Cadbury Trust after his father.
    • Charles Lloyd Cadbury (1926–2000) also served as a director of the Barrow Cadbury Fund.
      • Ruth Margaret Cadbury (born 1959) is a modern-day member of the family who is a Member of Parliament for the Labour party, representing Brentford & Isleworth since 2015. This means she helps make important decisions for the country.

Another son of Richard Cadbury was William Adlington Cadbury (1867–1957).

  • His grandson, George Corbyn Barrow (1903–1998), became a lawyer and even the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, a very important role in the city.

George Cadbury: The Dairy Milk Secret

George Cadbury (1839–1922) was John Cadbury's younger brother. He played a huge role in developing the company and, most famously, he perfected the recipe for the beloved Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate!

His children also held important positions:

  • Edward Cadbury (1873–1948) became the head of the chocolate factory and started the Edward Cadbury Charitable Trust, another family charity.
  • Marion Cadbury (1894–1979) was also part of the family.
  • Laurence John Cadbury (1889–1982) took over from his brother Edward as the head of the chocolate company in 1944.
    • Sir Adrian Hayhurst Cadbury (1929–2015) was a very important figure. He was the chairman of Cadbury and Cadbury Schweppes for 24 years! He was also a director of the Bank of England and even an Olympic rower.
    • Sir Dominic Cadbury (born 1940) is another successful businessman and was the Chancellor of the University of Birmingham.
  • Sir Egbert Cadbury (1893–1967) was a fighter pilot in the First World War before becoming a managing director of the family firm.
    • Peter Cadbury (1918–2006) was an entrepreneur, meaning he started and ran his own businesses.
