Genus:
Caecilia
Species:
thompsoni

Caecilia thompsoni, also known as Thompson's caecilian, is a special type of caecilian. Caecilians are amazing creatures that look a bit like worms or snakes, but they are actually amphibians! This means they are related to frogs and salamanders. Thompson's caecilian belongs to the family Caeciliidae.

This unique animal lives only in Colombia, a country in South America. When an animal or plant lives only in one specific place, we say it is endemic to that area. Thompson's caecilian is the biggest of all the worm-like caecilians. It can grow to be very long, reaching up to 1.5 meters (about 5 feet)! That's taller than many kids! It can also weigh around 1 kilogram (about 2.2 pounds).

What is a Caecilian?

Caecilians are a group of amphibians that don't have legs. They are often mistaken for snakes or large worms because of their long, slender bodies. Most caecilians live underground, burrowing through the soil. They have smooth, moist skin, just like frogs.

Where Do Thompson's Caecilians Live?

Thompson's caecilians make their homes in warm, wet places in Colombia. They prefer areas with lots of trees and moisture.

  • Moist Lowland Forests: These are forests found in lower areas where it rains a lot.
  • Moist Montane Forests: These are forests located on mountainsides, also very wet.
  • Plantations: Sometimes, they can be found in areas where crops like coffee or bananas are grown.
  • Rural Gardens: They might even live in gardens in the countryside.
  • Degraded Forests: Even if a forest has been partly damaged, Thompson's caecilians can sometimes still live there.

They love to burrow in the soft, damp soil, which helps them stay hidden and find food.

What Do They Eat?

Since Thompson's caecilians live underground, they mostly eat things they find in the soil. Their diet includes small invertebrates. This means they munch on creatures like:

  • Earthworms: These are a common food source for many burrowing animals.
  • Insects: They might eat insect larvae or other small insects they find.

They use their strong, pointed heads to push through the soil and find their meals.

How Do They Reproduce?

Like other amphibians, caecilians reproduce in interesting ways. Some caecilian species lay eggs, while others give birth to live young. For those that lay eggs, the mother often guards them until they hatch. Some caecilian mothers even produce a special fatty skin layer for their young to eat after they hatch! This helps the babies grow big and strong.

Thompson's caecilian, like many other caecilians, is not often seen because it spends most of its life hidden underground. Scientists learn about them by studying their habitats and occasionally finding them during research.
