Scientific classification

The Caesia micrantha, also known as the pale grass-lily, is a beautiful flowering plant. It belongs to the Hemerocallidaceae plant family. This plant grows naturally in Western Australia.

What Does the Pale Grass-Lily Look Like?

The pale grass-lily has roots that look like thin threads. Its leaves are quite long, usually between 15 and 65 centimeters (about 6 to 25 inches). The flat part of the leaf is about 3 to 10 millimeters wide.

The plant's flower stalk, called an inflorescence, can be 25 to 60 centimeters tall. It often has many branches. Each cluster of flowers usually has one to four blooms. These flower clusters are often found in pairs. After the flowers, the plant forms a seed pod called a capsule. This capsule usually has three parts and is about 2.5 to 5 millimeters wide. Inside, the seeds are very small, about 1.3 to 1.7 millimeters wide.

Where Does the Pale Grass-Lily Grow?

The pale grass-lily is found in many places across the southwest of Western Australia. It can grow in different types of soil. You can find it both on the hills and mountains, and on the flat coastal areas. Its range stretches from a town called Albany all the way up to Geraldton.

Is the Pale Grass-Lily Safe?

Good news! Under the laws of Western Australia, the pale grass-lily is considered "Not Threatened." This means there are plenty of these plants in nature, and they are not in danger of disappearing.

How Did It Get Its Name?

The pale grass-lily was first officially described in 1840. A famous botanist named John Lindley gave it its scientific name.

The second part of its name, micrantha, comes from ancient Greek words. "Mikros" means "small" or "little." "Anthos" means "flower." So, micrantha simply means "having small flowers" or "small-flowered." This name perfectly describes the plant's tiny blooms!
