Calatrava la Nueva

Calatrava la Nueva is a medieval castle and convent located on a hill called Alacranejo, in a town called Aldea del Rey, near Almagro, in Spain. Its full name in Spanish is Sacro convento-castillo de Calatrava la Nueva, which means "Holy convent-castle of New Calatrava."

This important site was once the main headquarters for a group of warrior monks known as the Order of Calatrava. They were a military and religious order, similar to the Knights Templar, who played a big role in the history of Spain.

A New Home for the Knights

The Order of Calatrava first lived in a place called Calatrava la Vieja, which means "Old Calatrava." This old site was about 60 kilometers (around 37 miles) north of their new home.

In the year 1217, the knights of the Order of Calatrava decided to move. They chose this new location, which offered better defenses and a stronger position. Because they moved, their original home became known as "Old Calatrava," and this new, impressive castle became known as "New Calatrava."

The Castle's Design

Calatrava la Nueva was built like a fortress to protect the knights and their lands. It has strong walls, towers, and a large church inside. The castle was designed to be both a military base and a place for the monks to live and pray. Its location on top of a hill made it very difficult for enemies to attack.

Life at the Castle

Life at Calatrava la Nueva was focused on both religious duties and military training. The knights were dedicated to defending Christian lands during the Reconquista, a long period when Christian kingdoms in Spain fought to reclaim territory from Muslim rule. They followed strict rules, prayed regularly, and trained as skilled warriors. The castle served as a center for their operations and a symbol of their power.
