History of the Building
The Calhoun Apartments were built for a company called Home Realty Trust. The outside of the building is made of yellow bricks. It also has brownstone decorations. You can see both flat and rounded parts on the sides facing the streets. The building was finished just before new fire safety rules came out in Springfield. These rules led to more buildings like the Calhoun being built.
Who Lived There?
Over the years, many different people lived in the Calhoun Apartments. This showed how Springfield itself was changing. At first, most people living there had jobs like teachers or store clerks. Factory workers also lived there. They came from many different backgrounds. A few small business owners lived there too.
Modern Updates and Changes
By the 1980s, the North End area of Springfield needed some improvements. The Calhoun Apartments were part of big plans to update the city. The Springfield Redevelopment Authority, a city group, bought a part of the building. They started to fix it up in 1983.
The inside of the building was completely updated. This meant changing many of the original features. The goal was to make the apartments modern and safe for people to live in. Some of the original wooden decorations around the outside entrances were also changed.
New Ownership for Housing
After the updates, the Calhoun Apartments were given to a group called Dwight Manor Associates. Later, the city took ownership of the buildings for a short time. In 2006, the city transferred them to the Jefferson Park Limited Partnership. This group planned to use the apartments for housing that people with low and moderate incomes could afford.
