Calvin Helin's Family Roots
Calvin Helin's father, Barry Helin, was a hereditary chief of the Gitlaan tribe. His mother, Verna Helin, belonged to the royal House of 'Wiiseeks of the Ginaxangiik tribe.
In the Tsimshian culture, family lines are often traced through the mother. This is called a matrilineal system. Because of this system, Calvin Helin is considered a Ginaxangiik Tsimshian of the Gispwudwada (Killerwhale) clan, following his mother's side.
Author and Advocate
Calvin Helin wrote a book in 2006 called Dances with Dependency: Indigenous Success through Self-Reliance. This book shares ideas on how Indigenous communities can achieve success by relying more on themselves. His cousin, Bill Helin, created the illustrations for the book.
Business and Energy
As of 2018, Calvin Helin was the president of a company called Eagle Spirit Energy Holding Ltd. This company is involved in energy projects.
He has chosen to remain neutral on the Trans Mountain Expansion Project, which is a large pipeline expansion project in Canada. Being neutral means he has not taken a side for or against the project.
