Camilla Mickwitz (born September 22, 1934 – died July 4, 1989) was a talented Finnish artist. She was a writer, an illustrator, and an animator. Camilla Mickwitz created many children's books and cartoons. Her stories often talked about families and everyday life.

About Camilla Mickwitz

Camilla Mickwitz studied art in Helsinki. She graduated in 1959 from the Institute of Industrial Arts. After school, she worked in advertising. She created ads for companies like Suomen Ilmoituskeskuksessa and Otavamedia. Camilla was also part of the Swedish-speaking community in Finland.

Her Creative Works

During her career, Camilla Mickwitz was very busy. She created twenty picture books for children. She also made twenty animated cartoons.

The Jason Series

One of Camilla's first popular creations was the Jason series. It was about a boy named Jason and his single mother.

  • Jason Animations: Four animated shorts were made first.
    • Jason was released in 1972.
    • Jason ja Frans (Jason and Friends) came out in 1973.
    • Jasonin kesä (Jason's Summer) also came out in 1973.
    • Jason ja vihainen Viivi (Jason and angry Viivi) was released in 1974.
  • Jason Books: The animated series then became a book series.
    • The first book, Jason: Tarina tavallisesta pienestä pojasta, came out in 1975. This means "Jason: A story about a typical little boy".
    • Jasonin kesä was published in 1976. It was re-released in 1984.
    • Jason ja vihainen Viivi was published in 1977.
    • The last book, Jason muuttaa maasta (Jason moves from the country), was published in 1978.

The Emilia Series

A year after the Jason series, Camilla Mickwitz started a new series. This one was about a girl named Emilia.

  • The first book was Emilia ja kolme pikkuista tätiä (Emilia and three little aunts) in 1979.
  • In 1980, three Emilia books were released:
    • Emilia ja kuningas Oskari (Emilia and King Oscar)
    • Emilia ja Oskarin nukke (Emilia and Oscar's Doll)
    • Emilia ja onni (Emilia and luck)
  • The final book, Emilia ja kaksoset (Emilia and Twins), came out in 1981.

Mimosa and Other Works

In 1983, Camilla Mickwitz wrote a book called "Mimosa". This book was also turned into an animated short film that same year. Camilla Mickwitz wrote and animated the short film herself.

In 1986, she helped with a popular Finnish TV show. She animated the opening for Pikku Kakkonen. She also designed the show's logo.

Awards and Recognition

Camilla Mickwitz won many awards for her amazing work.

  • She won the Finnish State Prize for Cinema in 1973 and 1979.
  • She won the Finnish State Prize for Literature in 1973, 1976, and 1986.
  • She received the Finnish Children's Culture Prize in 1987.
  • She won the famous Rudolf Koivu prize four times. She won in 1977, 1979, 1981, and 1984.

Her Jason series also won special awards:

  • The animation and book Jasonin kesä won "Best Children's Animation" at the Hollywood Festival of World Television in 1975.
  • It also won an IBBY Honour award for its illustrations in 1978.
  • The book Jason muuttaa maasta won the Arvid Lydecken Prize in 1979.
