At the time, Camp McGarry was the biggest military area in Nevada. It covered about 75 sq mi (190 km2). This large space was used by the U.S. Army.
A New Headquarters
In 1866, Camp McGarry became very important. The main office for the military district of Nevada moved there. It moved from Fort Churchill to Camp McGarry. This made Camp McGarry a central spot for military operations.
The Camp Closes
By the summer of 1868, most of the soldiers left Camp McGarry. The camp was officially closed on December 18, 1868. It had been used for only a few years.
Becoming a Reservation
After the Army left, the land was given to the U.S. Department of the Interior. This happened on March 25, 1871. The land then became part of the Summit Lake Indian Reservation. This means it was set aside for the Summit Lake Paiute Tribe.
