Discover Camp Yeomalt

Camp Yeomalt is a one-story building. It was first built as a Boy Scout camp. The lodge sits on about 3 acres of land.

It has a unique "camp style" design. You can find it on Bainbridge Island.

A Camp with Many Names

The camp was built in 1935. Its first name was Camp Major Hopkins. It was named after Major Maurice Jayne Hopkins.

Later, it became a military site. It was called the US Army 202nd Coast Artillery Bainbridge Island Headquarters. In 2000, it was renamed Camp Yeomalt.

Built During Tough Times

Camp Major Hopkins was built during the Great Depression. This was a time when many people didn't have jobs. The Franklin D. Roosevelt government created the Works Progress Administration (WPA).

The WPA helped people find work. Unemployed island residents built the camp. This project gave them jobs and helped the community.

The Original Lodge

The main lodge was built using large Douglas fir logs. It has a rustic, natural look. On the western side, there is a stone chimney.

This chimney is special because it has two fire boxes. One faces inside the lodge. The other faces outside, perfect for outdoor gatherings.

A Military Past

In 1942, a second building was added. It was built as an Army bathhouse. This happened when the camp was used by the US Army.

The camp played a role in protecting the coast. It served as a headquarters during World War II.

A Park for Everyone

In 1987, the Bainbridge Island Park & Recreation District took over the camp. They started caring for it. They wanted it to be a place for everyone.

They renamed it Camp Yeomalt in 2000. It's now a popular park. People can visit and enjoy the historic grounds.

A Historic Landmark

Camp Yeomalt is very important. In 2005, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a special place recognized for its history.

Being on this list helps protect the camp. It ensures future generations can learn from its past.
