Camphill Queen's Park Baptist Church is a beautiful church from the 1800s located in Glasgow, Scotland. It stands right across the street from the famous Queen's Park.
The church is known for its stunning French Gothic design. This style includes features like pointed arches and detailed stonework. It was designed by the architect William Leiper.
Construction of the church took several years. The church hall was built first in 1873. The main church building was finished on October 8, 1876. Its impressive octagonal (eight-sided) spire was added later, in 1883.
History of the Church
The church has a long and interesting history, including several name changes as different church groups came together.
How It All Started
The church was first started by members of another local church, the Queen's Park United Presbyterian Church. They wanted to build a new church for their community. So, they founded the Camphill United Presbyterian Church. It was built to be a parish church, which is a church that serves a specific local area or parish.
Joining with Other Churches
Over the years, different Christian groups in Scotland decided to unite. These changes affected the church's name.
- 1900: The United Presbyterian Church joined with the Free Church of Scotland. The church was then renamed Camphill United Free Church.
- 1929: The United Free Church of Scotland then united with the Church of Scotland. The church's name changed again to Camphill Queen's Park Church.
A New Beginning
In 1983, an agreement was made with a nearby church, Strathbungo Queen's Park. The plan was that one of the church buildings would eventually close, and the two congregations would join together.
At first, the plan was to keep the Camphill building. However, this plan was changed in 1990. The members decided to use the Strathbungo Queen's Park building instead. As a result, Camphill Queen's Park Church closed in the 1990s.
Later, the beautiful building was sold to the Baptist Church community. They already had a church nearby and now use the Camphill building for their services. Today, it is known as Camphill Queen's Park Baptist Church and is an active place of worship.
