Camryn Garrett's Writing Journey
Camryn Garrett started her writing career at a young age. When she was just 13, she became a reporter for Time for Kids. Since then, her articles have been published in well-known outlets such as Huffington Post, Rookie, and MTV.
How Her First Novel Came to Be
Camryn wrote her very first novel when she was 15 years old. However, publishers did not accept it because it was too much like The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.
Later, Camryn wrote the first version of Full Disclosure in 2016. She did this during National Novel Writing Month, an event where people try to write a whole novel in one month. She was inspired to write this story because she wanted to help people understand what it's like for young people living with HIV. She hoped her book would "shine a light on the realities of living with HIV" and help reduce the negative feelings or "stigma" that sometimes exist.
About Full Disclosure
Full Disclosure tells the story of Simone, a Black teenage girl who was born with HIV. The book was released on October 29, 2019, by Knopf. Reviewers praised the book for its honest portrayal. Publishers Weekly noted that readers would "root for sympathetic Simone." Kirkus also said that "Simone's story will educate readers about the intricacies of living fully with HIV."
Camryn Garrett's second novel, Off the Record, was published by Knopf in 2021.
