History of the Museum
How the Museum Started
The Canadian Children's Museum first opened its doors in 1989. This happened when the main museum, which was then called the Canadian Museum of Civilization, moved into its current building in Gatineau. It was a big moment for kids in Canada!
Growing Over the Years
Since it opened, the museum has grown and added more exciting things. The Canadian Museum of History expanded the Children's Museum's exhibits twice. The first time was in 1994, and then again in 2007. By July 2007, an amazing eight million people had visited the museum!
Recent Updates
The museum decided to make some big improvements starting in January 2020. After a lot of hard work, it reopened in May 2022. This means the museum is now even better and ready for new adventures!
Exploring the Exhibits
The Great Adventure
Most of the museum's space is filled with its main exhibit called The Great Adventure. This amazing area takes you on a journey to different cultures around the world. You can explore places like Nigeria, Japan, India, Mexico, and Indonesia. Each area has fun activities designed for kids 14 and under. You can find a library and even a theater inside this exhibit!
Special Exhibitions
Besides The Great Adventure, the CCM also has special exhibits that change over time. These can be new shows created by the museum itself or ones brought in from other museums. They always offer something new and exciting to see!
Television of Our Childhoods
In September 2022, a cool exhibition opened called "From Pepinot to PAW Patrol – Television of Our Childhoods." This show looked back at 70 years of TV shows made for kids. It featured about a hundred different shows in English, French, and even Indigenous languages. It was created with help from CBC/Radio-Canada and Télé-Québec.
Museum Collections
The Children's Museum has a huge collection of over 15,000 items! These items are used in the museum's exhibits and programs. The collection includes all sorts of things like old artifacts, toys, games, clothes, art, and photographs. These objects come from all over the world and show what life was like for children in the past and how it is today.
Museum Connections
The Canadian Children's Museum is part of a big international group called the Association of Children's Museums. It's also the only Canadian member of the Youth Museums Exhibit Collaborative. This means it connects with other children's museums around the world to share ideas and create amazing experiences for kids.
