Canadian Hockey League facts for kids
The Canadian Hockey League (or CHL) is a big organization that helps run junior ice hockey in Canada. Think of it like a main office for three major hockey leagues: the Western Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. These leagues are where talented young hockey players, usually between 16 and 20 years old, play before they might move on to professional hockey.
What is the CHL?
The Canadian Hockey League acts as an "umbrella organization." This means it oversees and connects the three main junior hockey leagues in Canada. It helps make sure the rules are fair and that the leagues work well together.
The Three Leagues
The CHL is made up of three exciting leagues:
- The Western Hockey League (WHL)
- The Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
- The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
There are 60 teams in total across these three leagues. Most of them, 52 teams, are in Canada, and 8 teams are in the United States. These teams compete hard throughout the season, hoping to win their league championship.
The Memorial Cup
At the end of each season, the champions from these three leagues, plus a host team, all play against each other in a special tournament called the Memorial Cup. This tournament decides the overall champion of the entire CHL, making it one of the most exciting events in junior hockey! Winning the Memorial Cup is a huge achievement for any young player.
