Candice Renee Price is an American mathematician. She is known for her work in DNA topology. She also helped start the website Mathematically Gifted & Black. This website shares stories about black mathematicians today. Candice Price supports women and people of color in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

What is DNA Topology?

Candice Price's main area of math research is called DNA topology. This field looks at how DNA strands can twist and knot. Imagine a long string that can get tangled. DNA, which is inside our bodies, can also get tangled. DNA topology helps scientists understand these twists and knots. It is important for understanding how our bodies work.

Her Journey in Mathematics

Candice Price studied mathematics for many years. She earned her first degree in math from California State University, Chico in 2003. Later, she received her master's degree from San Francisco State University in 2007. In 2012, she earned her highest degree, a doctorate, in mathematics from the University of Iowa. Her advisor there was Isabel Darcy.

Teaching and Research Roles

Today, Dr. Price is an associate professor at Smith College. Before this, she taught at the University of San Diego. She also taught at West Point, which is a military academy.

Helping Other Students

Candice Price also helped create a special event called the Underrepresented Students in Topology and Algebra Research Symposium (USTARS). This event started in 2011. It happens every year. It allows graduate students studying algebra and topology to share their research. It also helps them learn about careers and professional skills.

Mathematically Gifted & Black

In 2017, Dr. Price and three other mathematicians started the website Mathematically Gifted & Black. The other co-founders were Erica Graham, Raegan Higgins, and Shelby Wilson. Every February, during Black History Month, the website features a different black mathematician. It shares their life and work. This helps show the amazing contributions of black mathematicians.

Awards and Recognition

Candice Price has received several awards for her work. In 2013, she was chosen as a MAA Project NExT fellow. This program helps new math professors.

For her work on Mathematically Gifted & Black, she received the 2022 Presidential Recognition Award. This award came from the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM). In 2024, she also won the Deborah and Franklin Haimo Award. This award recognizes excellent college math teachers.

Dr. Price has also given important talks. She gave a main speech at the 2021 National Math Festival. She also gave an invited lecture at MathFest 2021 for the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).
