Candice Renee Price is an amazing African-American mathematician. She helped start a cool website called Mathematically Gifted & Black. This website shares stories about black mathematicians today. Candice also works hard to support women and people of color in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

What She Studies

Candice Price studies a special area of math called DNA topology. This involves using math to understand the shapes and structures of DNA. It's like using math to figure out how DNA twists and turns.

Her Journey in Math

Candice Price loved math from a young age. She earned her first degree in Mathematics from California State University, Chico in 2003. Later, she got her master's degree from San Francisco State University in 2007.

She then went on to earn her highest degree, a doctorate in Mathematics, from the University of Iowa in 2012. Her teacher, Isabel Darcy, helped guide her studies.

Today, Dr. Price is a professor at Smith College. Before that, she taught at the University of San Diego and at West Point.

Helping Other Students

Candice is one of the people who started the Underrepresented Students in Topology and Algebra Research Symposium (USTARS). This is an annual event that began in 2011. It's a special meeting where students studying algebra and topology can share their research. It also helps them learn about career opportunities and grow professionally.

Mathematically Gifted & Black

In 2017, Candice Price teamed up with Erica Graham, Raegan Higgins, and Shelby Wilson. Together, they created the website Mathematically Gifted & Black.

Every February, during Black History Month, the website highlights a different modern-day Black mathematician. It shares their life story and their amazing work. This helps show how many talented Black mathematicians there are today.

Awards and Recognitions

Candice Price has received many honors for her important work.

  • In 2013, she was chosen as a MAA Project NExT fellow. This program helps new math professors.
  • For her work on Mathematically Gifted & Black, she received the 2022 Presidential Recognition Award. This award came from the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM).
  • In 2024, she was given the Deborah and Franklin Haimo Award. This award celebrates excellent math teachers at colleges and universities.

She has also been invited to give important talks. She spoke at the National Math Festival in 2021. She also gave a special lecture for the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) at their MathFest event in 2021.
