Canning, South Dakota facts for kids
Canning is a small, undeveloped area in Hughes County, South Dakota, in the United States. It's known as an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
History of Canning
Canning was officially planned and marked out on maps in 1884. This process is called "platting." The community was named after a famous British leader, George Canning. He was a very important statesman who even served as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
A post office was opened in Canning in 1883, a year before the community was platted. It served the local people for many years. However, the post office eventually closed down in 1972.
