History of Canteen Brewhouse
How the Brewery Began
Canteen Brewhouse started in 1994. It was first called Il Vicino Brewing Company. It began inside a pizza restaurant in Albuquerque's Nob Hill area. The people who started it were Greg Atkin, Rick Post, Thomas White, and Tom Hennessy. They noticed that customers at their pizza restaurant really wanted special beers to go with their food.
First Beer and Early Growth
So, in December 1993, they made their very first beer. They called it Old Route 66 Golden Ale. As more people liked their beer, Tom Hennessy needed help. He asked Brady McKeown, a student at the University of New Mexico, to join them. Brady learned all about making craft beer from Tom. He later became the main brewer for Il Vicino.
Winning Awards Early On
In 1995, the brewery won its first big award. Their Wet Mountain IPA beer won a medal at the Great American Beer Festival. This was just the start of many awards for the brewery and Brady McKeown. They kept winning awards for almost 20 years!
Opening the Canteen Taproom
In 2011, the company opened a new place. It was called the Il Vicino Brewery (IVB) Canteen taproom. This new spot was also in Albuquerque. It was a large building, about 6,500 square feet. It had a place to make beer, an outdoor patio, food, and live music.
Awards and Achievements
Canteen Brewhouse, and its earlier name Il Vicino Brewing Company, has won many awards. They have won 13 medals at the Great American Beer Festival. They also won seven medals at the World Beer Cup. Plus, they have won the New Mexico IPA Challenge six times.
Overall, the brewery has won over 115 awards. These awards come from local, national, and even international competitions. Canteen Brewhouse is also the oldest brewery in Albuquerque that is still open today.
Most recently, in 2014, Canteen Brewhouse won two awards at the Great American Beer Festival. Their Dougie Style Amber Ale won a Gold Medal. Their Saint Bob's Imperial Stout '07 won a Silver Medal.
