Art Inside the Capitol
Famous Murals
The National Capitol is not just a place for laws; it also holds amazing art! Inside, you can find beautiful large paintings called murals. These artworks often tell stories and show important moments in Colombian history.
In 1938, an artist named Ignacio Gómez Jaramillo painted two murals for the Capitol. These added to the building's beauty and history.
Later, in 1947, another famous artist, Santiago Martínez Delgado, created a huge mural. He was asked to paint it for a big meeting called the Inter-American Conference. This special painting is in the Elliptic Chamber of the Congress building. It shows important figures like Bolivar and Santander leaving the Cucuta congress. This event was a key moment when Great Colombia was being formed. Many people believe this mural is the most important fresco painting in all of Colombia and Santiago Martínez Delgado's best work!
