Congress of Colombia facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Congress of the Republic of Colombia (Spanish: Congreso de la República de Colombia) is the main law-making body in Colombia. Think of it as the country's big team of lawmakers. It's a bicameral legislature, which means it has two separate parts, or "houses," that work together.

These two houses are the Senate (called Senado in Spanish) and the Chamber of Representatives (called Cámara de Representantes). Members from both houses are chosen by people voting in elections. They serve for four years at a time.

What is the Colombian Congress?

The Congress of Colombia is where important decisions are made for the country. It's like the brain of the government when it comes to creating new laws or changing old ones. Its main job is to represent the people of Colombia and make sure their voices are heard in how the country is run.

How Many Members Are There?

The Congress has a total of 280 members. These members are split between the two houses:

  • The Senate has 108 members.
  • The Chamber of Representatives has 172 members.

Each of these members is elected by citizens from different parts of Colombia. They work hard to bring up issues and ideas that matter to the people they represent.

What Does the Congress Do?

The Congress has many important jobs. Here are some of the main ones:

  • Making Laws: This is their most important job. They discuss, debate, and vote on new laws that affect everyone in Colombia. These laws can be about anything from education and healthcare to taxes and the environment.
  • Controlling the Government: The Congress also watches over the President and other government officials. They can ask questions, investigate actions, and make sure everything is being done correctly and fairly.
  • Approving Budgets: They decide how the government spends money. This means they look at plans for roads, schools, hospitals, and other public services, and approve how much money will be used for each.
  • Representing Citizens: Each member of Congress represents a group of people or a region in Colombia. They bring the concerns and needs of their communities to the national level.

How Do Laws Get Made?

Making a law is a long process that involves both houses of Congress.

  • First, an idea for a law, called a "bill," is introduced in either the Senate or the Chamber of Representatives.
  • Then, committees in that house study the bill, make changes, and vote on it.
  • If it passes in one house, it then goes to the other house for the same process.
  • If both houses approve the bill, it goes to the President. The President can sign it into law or send it back with suggestions for changes.
  • If the President signs it, it becomes a law!

Why is a Bicameral Congress Important?

Having two houses, like Colombia's Congress, is called being "bicameral." This system is important for several reasons:

  • Careful Review: It means that every new law has to be approved by two different groups of people. This helps make sure that laws are thought about very carefully and that mistakes are caught.
  • Different Perspectives: The Senate and the Chamber of Representatives often represent different types of interests or regions. This allows for a wider range of opinions to be heard and considered before a law is passed.
  • Checks and Balances: It creates a system where each house can check the power of the other. This helps prevent any one group from having too much control.
