The Capture of Breda of 1581, also known as the Haultepenne Fury, was a surprising event that happened in the city of Breda on July 26–27, 1581. During this time, Spanish troops took control of the city. This attack was led by Claude de Berlaymont, who was known as the lord of Haultepenne.

How Breda Was Captured

The Spanish troops managed to enter Breda by surprise. This was possible because a guard, called a sentry, was bribed. A follower of King Charles de Gavre, who was being held prisoner at the castle, paid the guard. The bribed sentry then allowed the Spanish soldiers to get into the castle.

The Attack on the City

Even though the people of Breda tried to fight back, the attackers were very strong. They quickly took control of the most important city gates. After securing the gates, the Spanish troops launched attacks on key buildings in the city. These included the city hall, the main tower, and the church.

The Surrender and Aftermath

The defenders of Breda eventually gave up. They surrendered on one condition: that the city would not be looted. Looting means stealing valuable things from a place, often by force. However, this promise was not kept. At 10:00 a.m., the fighting stopped, but then the city was looted and many people were killed. This sad event is sometimes called a massacre. About 584 citizens died during this short but violent time.
