Caraguatay is a town and a "municipality" in Argentina. A municipality is like a local government area. It is found in the Montecarlo Department of the Misiones Province.

People started settling in Caraguatay around 1909. But it wasn't until 1940 that the first group was formed to help the town grow. Today, Caraguatay's main ways of making money are by growing yerba mate, harvesting trees (forestry), and raising farm animals (livestock farming).

Caraguatay is also famous for a special house. This house in Puerto Caraguatay is where Ernesto Guevara Lynch and Celia de la Serna lived. Celia was pregnant with their son, who later became very well-known as Che Guevara. The family owned a yerba mate farm near the town. This means Che Guevara spent his very first years growing up right here. Today, the house where Ernesto Guevara Lynch lived is a museum.

What Does Caraguatay Mean?

The name Caraguatay comes from the Guarani language. In Guarani, "karaguata" is a type of plant called a bromeliad. The word "y" means water. So, Caraguatay can be translated as "Water Karaguata."
