Early Life and Royal Service
Carew Reynell was born in 1563. His father was Richard Reynell from Devon, a county in England. In 1591, Carew became a "gentleman pensioner" to Queen Elizabeth I. This meant he was a trusted member of the Queen's household. He was so well-liked that the Queen asked for him to be given two important pieces of land in Devon.
In 1593, he was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for a place called Callington. An MP is someone elected to represent people in the House of Commons. This was where laws were discussed and made.
Soldier and Politician
Sir Carew also worked as the Queen's printer for books in Greek and Latin until 1597. After this, he joined the Earl of Essex on a sea journey called the Islands Voyage. He might have even been in charge of a ship named the Foresight.
Later, he went with the Earl of Essex to Ireland. There, he led a group of soldiers and held an important fort called Duncannon. He was made a knight on July 12, 1599. He was also the captain of Duncannon castle from 1599 to 1601.
When the Earl of Essex faced difficulties, Sir Carew Reynell stayed loyal. He said he would never betray the trust placed in him. He was briefly held in February 1601, but it was quickly shown that he was not involved in any wrongdoing.
Later Years and Legacy
In 1601, Sir Carew Reynell was again elected as an MP, this time for Lancaster. In 1603, he became the keeper of a large house in Dartford, Kent. He also became a "gentleman usher" for King James I. This meant he was a high-ranking attendant in the King's private rooms.
He continued his political career, being elected as an MP for Wallingford in 1614. His last time serving as an MP was in 1621, when he represented Cricklade.
Sir Carew Reynell passed away around the age of 61. He was buried in a church called St. Martin-in-the-Fields. He was married to Susan Erneley, but they did not have any children.
