How It Started
Carey Baptist College began a long time ago, in 1924. When it first opened, it was called New Zealand Baptist Theological College. The very first classes were held in 1926.
At first, the college mainly trained men. They learned how to become leaders, often called ministers, for Baptist churches across New Zealand. The first leader of the college was a person named J.J. North.
New Name for a New Era
In 1992, the college changed its name. It became Carey Baptist College. This new name was chosen to honor an important English missionary named William Carey. He was a Baptist missionary who lived a long time ago.
