The Carithers Store Building was an old shop in Table Grove, Illinois. It was built a long time ago, in 1871. This building was special because it showed off two cool styles of architecture: Greek Revival and Italianate. For many years, it was the only two-story wooden store left in the area. It was even listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987! Sadly, the building isn't there anymore. It was taken off the list in 2020.

A Busy Store's Story

The Carithers Store Building was built in 1871. Two brothers, William and John H. Carithers, owned it. They wanted a big store for their business.

Table Grove was growing fast in the 1870s. This was because a new train line came to town in 1870. Many new shops and buildings were built then. The Carithers brothers built a large, two-story store. It even had office space and a canopy for showing goods outside. This showed they expected their store to be very successful.

Who Ran the Store?

The store did well for many years. John Carithers bought a big house in 1897. The store was even shown on a map of Table Grove in 1912.

In 1898, John's son, Dwight B. Carithers, and the brothers' nephew, William L. Hipsley, took over the store. After John passed away in 1902, Dwight took over the family farm. William Hipsley then managed the store by himself. He ran it until 1922.

What Happened Later?

After 1922, the building was used for different things. It was rented out as a shop. It was also used as a Sunday school. Sometimes, it was just a storage area.

Building Design and Style

The Carithers Store was a two-story building made of wood. It had a mix of Greek Revival and Italianate styles. People back then thought even regular buildings should look nice.

Cool Architectural Details

The building had special triangle shapes called pediments on its roof ends. These pediments had fancy tooth-like decorations called dentils. The corners of the building had flat, column-like shapes called pilasters, which were common in Greek Revival style.

The windows were tall and narrow. They had curved tops, which is a common feature of Italianate buildings.

Why Was It Special?

When the building was added to the National Register, it was the only two-story wooden commercial building left in the area. This meant it was a very important example of its kind. Other similar buildings in nearby towns had been torn down or had fallen apart.

However, if you look at pictures of the site today, the building is no longer there.
