Carl's Ice Cream, often just called "Carl's," is a famous place to get frozen treats. It's a special walk-up window stand located at 2200 Princess Anne Street in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Since 2005, this unique building has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's an important historical site in the United States.
A Sweet History of Carl's
Carl Sponseller started Carl's Frozen Custard stand way back in 1947. The building itself is quite old and special. It has a cool design called Art Moderne. This style was popular in the 1930s and 1940s.
In 2005, the building became a part of the National Register of Historic Places. This is like a list of buildings, sites, and objects that are important in American history.
Family Business and Timeless Treats
Since 1947, Carl's has used the same old-fashioned Electro Freeze machines. These machines are from the 1940s! They make the delicious frozen custard every day.
Frozen custard is a bit different from regular ice cream. It has eggs in it, which makes it extra creamy. Carl's keeps it simple, selling only three classic flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry.
When Carl Sponseller retired, he passed the business to his brothers, Paul and Herbert Sponseller. Later, it was passed down again to Ramona Sponseller (Settle), Daniel Sponseller, and Cristina Sponseller (McCann). This means Carl's has always stayed in the same family!
Why Carl's is So Popular
Carl's has many loyal fans. People love it so much that the line of customers often wraps around the building. This happens even when the weather isn't great!
Carl's is a seasonal business. It closes each year from the Sunday before Thanksgiving. It then reopens on the Friday of Presidents Day Weekend. This makes getting a treat from Carl's even more special when it's open.
