Carl Bryant Daniels, born on August 26, 1970, in St. Louis, Missouri, is an American professional boxer. He competed in the Light Middleweight division, which is for boxers weighing up to 154 pounds. Carl Daniels was a champion, holding the WBA Light Middleweight title in 1995.
Early Boxing Career
Carl Daniels is a southpaw, meaning he fights with his right hand and foot forward. He had a very successful amateur career. In 1987, he won the junior world championships. He also won the Golden Gloves title in the flyweight division.
In 1988, Carl became the US featherweight champion. He even defeated another famous boxer, Kevin Kelley, during the Olympic trials. His amateur record was impressive, with 170 wins and only 7 losses.
Professional Boxing Journey
Carl Daniels, known by his nickname "The Squirrel," started his professional boxing career in 1988. In 1992, he got a big chance to fight for the WBC Light Middleweight Title against Terry Norris. However, Norris won that fight.
Three years later, in 1995, Carl fought Julio César Green for the WBA Light Middleweight Title, which was available. Carl won this fight by a decision, becoming a world champion!
In his very first defense of the title, he faced Julio César Vásquez. Carl was ahead on the judges' scorecards, but Vásquez won by a knockout in the 11th round. This knockout was so powerful that Ring Magazine named it the "Knockout Of The Year."
Carl tried to win back the WBA belt in 1997 against Laurent Boudouani, but he lost that fight. He later had another shot at a major title in 2002, when he fought against the legendary boxer Bernard Hopkins. Carl lost this fight in the 10th round.
Carl Daniels had a long professional career, competing in 69 fights. He won 50 of those fights, with 32 wins coming by knockout. He had 18 losses and 1 draw.
