Early Life and Training

Carl Theodor Schulz was born in Berlin, Germany. His father, Christian Schulz, was a tailor. When Carl was a teenager in the 1850s, he started working in plant nurseries and gardens in Berlin and Potsdam. Later, in the 1860s, he worked at a botanical garden in Hamburg. A botanical garden is like a special park where many different kinds of plants are grown for scientific study and public enjoyment.

A Career in Botanical Gardens

In March 1865, after working for five years in Hamburg, Carl Theodor Schulz moved to Norway. He was hired to work at the University Botanical Garden in Oslo. This was a big step in his career.

Leading the Oslo Botanical Garden

Carl Theodor Schulz worked hard at the Oslo Botanical Garden. In 1893, he became the head gardener. This meant he was in charge of all the plants and the people who cared for them. He took over this important job after the previous head gardener, Nils Green, passed away. Schulz stayed in this position until he died in 1914.

Sharing His Knowledge

Carl Theodor Schulz also liked to share what he knew about plants. In 1895, he published a book called Om botaniske haver. This title means "About Botanical Gardens" in English. It showed his deep understanding of how to create and manage these special gardens.

Helping Gardeners Grow

Carl Theodor Schulz was not just a gardener; he also helped create important groups for other gardeners. He was a founding member of the Christiania Gardener Association. Christiania was the old name for Oslo. He was the first chairman of this group. He also helped start the Norwegian Horticulture Society. Horticulture is the art and science of growing plants. He was the vice-chairman of this society. From 1892 to 1902, he was also on the board of the Horticulture Society, helping to guide its work.

Family Life

Carl Theodor Schulz was invited to Norway by a man named Frederik Schübeler. Schübeler was also a well-known plant expert. In February 1875, Carl Theodor Schulz married Ingeborg Strengberg in Østre Aker. Ingeborg was the adopted daughter of Frederik Schübeler.
