Carlo Biotti (born in 1901 – died on 10 December 1977) was an important Italian judge. He became the President of the Court of Milan, which is a very high position in the legal system. He was well-known for a specific legal case in 1971. This case involved the death of Giuseppe Pinelli and the police commissioner Luigi Calabresi.

Who was Carlo Biotti?

Carlo Biotti was a respected judge in Italy. He worked in the courts and made decisions about legal cases. He was known for being fair and dedicated to his work. His career was very important in the Italian legal system.

The Pinelli Case and Biotti's Role

Carlo Biotti was the main judge in a big case. This case was started by the wife of Giuseppe Pinelli. She wanted to find out what happened to her husband. Pinelli had died while being questioned by the police. This happened after a terrible event called the Piazza Fontana bombing. Police commissioner Luigi Calabresi was in charge of the investigation into the bombing.

On May 27, 1971, something unusual happened. Biotti was removed from the case. This happened because Calabresi's lawyer asked for it. The lawyer claimed that Biotti had already made up his mind about the case. The lawyer said Biotti had admitted this in a private talk. Biotti strongly said this was not true.

Why was Biotti Removed?

Biotti and the other two judges working with him were not sure how Pinelli died. They did not believe he simply fell from a police station window. Biotti's removal from the case was very controversial. It stopped the investigation for two years. It also prevented experts from examining Pinelli's body to find out more.

Clearing His Name

Carlo Biotti spent many years trying to prove his innocence. He wanted to show that the claims against him were false. In November 1974, the Court of Florence officially cleared his name. This meant he was proven innocent of any wrongdoing.

Biotti passed away three years later, in 1977, when he was 76 years old. His story was even featured in a movie. In the 2012 film Piazza Fontana: The Italian Conspiracy, an actor named Bob Marchese played the role of Carlo Biotti.

Biotti's Connection to Sports
