Carlo Cignani (born May 15, 1628 – died September 8, 1719) was a famous Italian painter. He created a new way of painting. His style showed a calm and personal feeling. It was different from the more energetic art of his time. His work influenced later artists like Guido Reni and Guercino.

About Carlo Cignani's Life

Carlo Cignani was born in Bologna, Italy. His family was noble but did not have much money. His father's name was Pompeo and his mother's was Maddalena Quaini.

His Art Training

In Bologna, Carlo first studied with Battista Cairo. Later, he became the most famous student of Francesco Albani. Carlo stayed very close to Albani throughout his life. One of his first important jobs was painting St Paul exorcising demon for a church. He also painted large scenes for a palace in Bologna. These showed important historical events.

Carlo was also greatly inspired by the artist Correggio. He also admired the works of Melozzo da Forlì. For example, Carlo's greatest painting is the Assumption of the Virgin. It is on the ceiling of a church in Forlì. This painting was inspired by Correggio's art. It also used Melozzo's special way of showing things from below. Carlo worked on these ceiling paintings for about twenty years!

Later Years and Legacy

In 1681, Carlo Cignani moved back to Bologna from Parma. He opened a special art school there. It was called an accademia del nudo. This school taught students how to paint from live models. One of his famous students was Giuseppe Maria Crespi.

Carlo Cignani was a kind and humble person. He was also very generous. He turned down special honors offered by the Duke of Parma. He just wanted to live and die as an artist. In 1686, he moved to Forlì, where he passed away.

After he died, a famous art school in Bologna was founded in 1706. It was called the Accademia Clementina. Carlo Cignani was chosen as its leader for life, even though he was not there. This showed how much he was respected.

Carlo Cignani's Family and Students

Carlo Cignani's son, Felice Cignani (1660–1724), also became a painter. His nephew, Paolo Cignani (1709–1764), painted too. Some of Carlo's most well-known students were Marcantonio Franceschini and Federico Bencovich. Many other artists also learned from him.
