Carlos Loveira was born in Santa Clara, Cuba. He became a journalist and a writer who focused on naturalism. This style of writing shows life as it really is, often focusing on how people are affected by their surroundings.

Early Life and Return to Cuba

When Carlos was nine years old, he lost his parents. In 1895, he moved to New York with his mother's family. Three years later, in 1898, he returned to Cuba. He wanted to help his country gain independence from Spain. During the time the United States was in Cuba, he worked as an interpreter for American soldiers.

Fighting for Workers' Rights

Carlos Loveira strongly believed in fairness for workers. He was very active in movements that aimed to improve working conditions and give workers more power. From 1903, he worked in the railroad industry across Latin America.

In 1910, he started the Liga Cubana de Empleados de Ferrocarriles. This was a union for railroad workers in Cuba. He also founded a newspaper called El Ferrocarrilero (1909-1911) to share news and ideas with workers. When the union faced difficulties, he moved from Camagüey to Sagua La Grande. He also started other publications, including the newspaper Gente Nueva and the magazine Cauterios.

A Life of Travel and Writing

In 1913, Carlos Loveira had to leave Cuba and went to Mexico. For the rest of his life, he traveled between Mexico, Cuba, and the United States. He continued his work as a labor organizer, helping workers to get better treatment. He also worked as a lobbyist, which means he tried to influence governments and organizations. He even worked with the United Nations to discuss important issues.

Carlos Loveira wrote several important novels. These include Los inmorales (1910), Generales y doctores (1920), Los ciegos (1922), La última lección (1924), and Juan Criollo (1927). His books often explored social issues and the lives of ordinary people.
