Biography
Early Life and Education
Carlos Sánchez Mato was born in 1970 in Madrid, Spain. His parents moved to Madrid from the province of Salamanca. His father was a police officer, and his mother was a housekeeper. Carlos studied at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and earned a degree in Economic Sciences. This means he learned a lot about how money works in countries and businesses.
He lived in the Aluche area of Madrid and was active in community groups. He also joined a group called ATTAC Madrid in 2011. This group works on ideas about how money and taxes should be managed to help everyone.
Becoming a City Council Member
Carlos Sánchez Mato has been a long-time member of the United Left political party. In 2015, he decided to run for a position on the Madrid City Council. This is like being on a local government team that makes decisions for the city. He was a candidate on the Ahora Madrid list for the 2015 Madrid City Council election.
He was successfully elected as a member of the City Council. On June 13, 2015, Manuela Carmena became the Mayor of Madrid. Carlos Sánchez Mato then joined the City Government Board. He was given the important job of managing the city's economy and finances. He also became the Councillor-President for the district of Vicálvaro.
Challenges in the City Government

While he was in charge of Madrid's economy, Carlos Sánchez Mato faced some challenges. He had disagreements with Cristóbal Montoro, who was the Minister of Finance for the whole country. These disagreements were about how much money the city of Madrid was allowed to spend. The national government had rules about spending, which meant the city had to be very careful with its budget.
Because of these disagreements, Mayor Manuela Carmena decided to remove him from his role in the City Government Board in December 2017. He was then given a different role as the President of the district of Latina, starting in January 2018.
Later Political Activities
In early 2019, Carlos Sánchez Mato considered running in the national elections for the Unidas Podemos coalition. However, he later decided not to, thinking it was best for the political group.
Later, he took on another important role. He became the leader for the United Left–Madrid (IU–Madrid) party's list of candidates for the 2019 Madrid City Council election. This meant he was the main person representing his party in the local elections for Madrid.
