About Carlos Sánchez Mato

His Early Life and Education

Carlos Sánchez Mato was born in 1970 in Madrid, the capital city of Spain. His parents moved to Madrid from the province of Salamanca. His father was a police officer, and his mother was a housekeeper.

Carlos studied at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and earned a degree in Economic Sciences. This means he learned a lot about how money works in countries and businesses. He has described himself as both a "Communist and Christian". He was also involved in Christian community groups and worked as an economist in private companies. In 2011, he joined a group called ATTAC Madrid, which focuses on fair financial rules.

Becoming a City Council Member

Carlos Sánchez Mato has been a long-time member of the United Left political group. In 2015, he ran for election to the Madrid City Council. This is like a local government that helps run the city. He was elected as a City Council member.

After Manuela Carmena became the Mayor of Madrid on June 13, 2015, Carlos Sánchez Mato joined her team. He was given an important job: he became the person in charge of the city's economy and finances. He also helped manage the Vicálvaro district of Madrid.

While Carlos Sánchez Mato was in charge of Madrid's money, he had some disagreements. He had different ideas from Cristóbal Montoro, who was the national Minister of Finance. They disagreed about how much money the city could spend.

Eventually, he also had differences with Mayor Manuela Carmena. Because of these disagreements about the city's budget, Mayor Carmena changed his role in December 2017. He was then moved to lead the district of Latina, starting in January 2018.

Running for New Elections

In early 2019, Carlos Sánchez Mato wanted to run in the primary elections for his party. This would have allowed him to become a candidate for the national general election in April 2019. However, a few days later, he decided not to run. He said he was thinking about what was best for his political group.

Later, he agreed to lead the list of candidates for the 2019 Madrid City Council election. This happened after another politician decided not to lead the list. Carlos Sánchez Mato won the vote to become the main candidate for his party in the city elections.
