Carlos Quiñones Velázquez, known as "Carlín," was a talented baseball player from Puerto Rico. He was a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB). This means he was a special kind of pitcher who came into the game after the starting pitcher. He played for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Carlín was born in Loiza, Puerto Rico, on March 22, 1948. He was 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed 180 pounds. He batted and threw with his right hand.
Playing in the Major Leagues
Carlos Velázquez joined the Milwaukee Brewers in the American League during the middle of the 1973 baseball season. Even though his time in the big leagues was short, he made an impact.
During his time with the Brewers:
- He won 2 games and lost 2 games.
- He earned 2 saves. A "save" happens when a relief pitcher finishes a close game without letting the other team score too many runs.
- His earned run average (ERA) was 2.58. A lower ERA means a pitcher is very good at preventing runs.
- He pitched in 18 games.
Minor League Career
Before playing in the MLB, Velázquez spent eight seasons playing Minor league baseball. This was from 1969 to 1976. In the Minor Leagues, he had a record of 46 wins and 48 losses. His ERA was 2.69 over 301 games. Playing in the Minor Leagues helps players get ready for the big leagues.
Later Life
Carlos Velázquez passed away in his hometown of Loiza, Puerto Rico, on March 16, 2000. He was 51 years old.
